diverse group of people discussing professional material, motivations of BiRD Bipolar

The Bipolar Research Directory (BiRD) grew from a simple frustration: people with bipolar disorder couldn’t easily find studies to join, and researchers couldn’t find participants. But we also recognize why many people are hesitant to participate in research—the field has a troubling history of exploiting and harming vulnerable populations, particularly people of color and those from marginalized communities. That mistrust is earned and valid.

BiRD exists to do things differently. We’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Dr. Sheri Johnson, a leading bipolar researcher, along with colleagues who are intimately familiar with the struggles of bipolar disorder and deeply committed to ethical, participant-centered research. Dr. Johnson’s foundational principle guides everything we do: “No data is more important than the safety, well-being, and comfort of our participants.”

We connect people with bipolar disorder to current research opportunities from vetted, trustworthy sources. We make information about studies clear and accessible—no jargon, no mystery about what participation actually involves. You deserve to know what you’re signing up for.

We want to hear from you.

Whether you’re considering participating in research for the first time or have been involved in studies before, we welcome you. Current psychology research has a significant representation problem—studies that don’t include diverse participants can’t produce findings that help everyone. We especially encourage people of color and those from disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds to explore these opportunities, as your voices have been historically excluded and are critically needed. Your participation matters, your concerns are valid, and we’re here to answer any questions you have.

If you know someone who might be interested in learning about bipolar research or participating in studies, please share our website.

If you’re conducting a study for individuals with bipolar disorder and would like it added to our directory, email thebipolarbird@gmail.com.
